Characterised by subdued light and mist, the landscapes John Waterhouse paints come alive with a character and history of their own; you can almost hear the bird song rising through the air.

Using a palette of sepia tones to capture his dreamy dawn and evening views, his paintings are immersed in atmosphere and mysticism; it’s the kind of scene where you wouldn’t be surprised if a Hobbit appeared!
