Alexander Millar

Scottish born artist Alexander Millar has seen his work “take on a life of its own” in recent years.

Recognition followed being short listed as a finalist for “Back from the Bookies” in the Daily Mail’s alternative art competition “Not the Turner Prize” in 2002. In this early piece a solitary figure stands solemnly, reflecting on his loss or gain.

Alexander Millar uses childhood memories as a basis for his characters. His depictions of working class folk or “Gadgies” going about their business evoke the nostalgia of a time gone by.

In his 2006 collection “New Light” Alexander Millar places his familiar “Gadgies” within meticulously woven settings, where vivid warm colours and light direct you deep into scenes.
